... is not what you'll find here...

But!! I am finally writing in my journal, mostly to ask the folks who still bother reading my journals when I update it, if you know of any cool fantasy / fiction books for kids ages 8-12. My oldest daughter has read all of Harry Potter & is starting on Twilight but I'd love to get her some more books for Christmas, but I seem out of the "what is cool to read" loop! So, if anyone has any advice on books or if you're kid is into a certain book, please post here and tell me!

Thanks!!

Oh, I am late but:

* Everything from Walter Moers! I hope they did translate his books fine since he's a master with words.

He wrotes funny, very entertaining fantasy. Very very entertaining for all ages. I have read so far:

"The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear"
"Rumo"
"The City of Dreaming Books"

* The Tripods Trilogy: "White Mountains", "City of Gold and Lead" and "Pool of Fire" by John Christopher

I have read it first when I was 10 or 11 and it is still one of the best Scifi/Fantasy setups I have ever read. 5 from 5 stars!

* "The Clouded World" by Jay Amory

I have read book 1 this year and I really like the setup. It is more focused on younger readers. Nevertheless I enjoyed reading it.

* His Dark Materials Trilogy Box Set (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman

I have read the first two books some years back and they were brilliant. Book 3 is lying here btu I bought it a few years later and can't remember all the details from the first two books so I have to read them again first.

I am reading a lot scifi and fantasy, ~30 to 50 novels a year and I am doing this for 30 years. But I started very early with focus on hard science so this might not be to interesting for your oldest daughter. And some books like the "Betsy" vampire-series by Mary Janice Davidson or "Glassbooks of the Dream-Eaters" by Gordon Dahlquist are more focused on more mature readers.
